Bringing the holiday spirit to Brooklyn

Set in the heart of Brooklyn, Bed-Stuy Gateway BID’s Winter Wonderland holiday market has brought holiday celebrations to the the streets of Bed-Stuy and supported local small businesses, crafters, and creators since its first iteration in 2019.

Through the Neighborhoods Now initiative, Gretel partnered with Bed-Stuy’s community leaders to bring Winter Wonderland to life through a joyful visual identity that celebrates Bed-Stuy’s vibrant culture and history while wrapping the neighborhood with holiday cheer.

The visual identity celebrates two of Bed-Stuy’s most unique characteristics: a bold and vibrant culture that’s pushed culture forward through music and street art, and a rich history of ornate Victorian architecture that permeates the entire neighborhood.

At the heart of the Winter Wonderland look & feel is a pair of dynamic “Ws” set in Esselte Letraset’s iconic typeface Lazybones. The letterforms fluidly transform to become inclusive and approachable, reconfiguring and combining into various holiday decorations, from snowflakes, christmas trees, menorahs, to patterns that wrap the neighborhood with holiday spirit.

As part of an environmentally conscious approach to the event ephemera, we designed an event map that doubles as wrapping paper and takeaway pamphlets that can be sent out to loved ones as holiday postcards.
